2025-26 9CAT Fantasy Basketball Rankings

In this article

These rankings are Breakout's end-of-season assessment of the 2025-26 nine-category season: an account of how each player should have been valued on draft night in October, had the full season been known in advance.

Availability, more than usage or efficiency, ended up being the most important variable.

How these rankings work

  • Rankings are based on stats through to the end of Week 22. Most fantasy leagues have already wrapped by this point, so the season's last three weeks don't factor into the rankings.

  • Players are valued relative to their best-fit build. The weight of a player's weakest categories are discounted relative to his strongest. A player who creates significant drag in one or two categories, but generates elite production across the others, will generally finish in a higher tier above a balanced producer. H2H category leagues reward building around your team strengths, and these rankings reflect that philosophy.

  • Elite per-game production with reduced availability is valued higher than mediocre production with maximum availability, even if the season totals add up to be the same. When a player is on IL, that roster spot is free for an active manager to stream value into.

  • Availability still matters. Players with multiple absences throughout the season take a meaningful hit, and the size of that hit depends on the shape of their absences rather than the raw missed-game count. 10 games missed over one stint costs less than 10 games missed across B2B sets.

AVL is availability, the share of team games played. Chg is the year-over-year change in end-of-season 9-cat rank, and "—" marks a player new to the ranked pool.

The top of the board

This is who ended up leading 2025-26 fantasy 9CAT performance. The number in brackets shows how many places each player rose or fell from their 2024-25 finish.

1. Nikola Jokić — Jokić remained the safest first pick because 28.0 points, 12.6 rebounds and 10.6 assists on .573 shooting gave managers elite volume without needing to punt. Denver has since added DeMar DeRozan, which may take a little scoring and creation away from Jokić, although he is still a clear top-two pick.

2. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander — Oklahoma City's hierarchy has not changed. Gilgeous-Alexander remains the clear first option, and the Thunder did not add anyone who threatens his touches. His 31.6 points on .553/.888 shooting and only 2.1 turnovers may soften slightly, but his role remains secure and this finish looks largely repeatable.

3. Tyrese Maxey (+12) — Maxey reached third as Philadelphia's primary perimeter engine, producing 29.0 points, 6.7 assists, 3.3 threes and 2.0 steals. He now shares the floor with LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, as well as Joel Embiid. The cleaner shots may improve his efficiency, but there will be fewer possessions and playmaking reps available.

4. Victor Wembanyama (-1) — Wembanyama's 3.0 blocks and 2.0 threes gave managers a category combination no other player could match. San Antonio has added more creation and frontcourt support, which should reduce his difficult attempts without affecting the defensive numbers. His fourth-place finish came with room for improvement in both efficiency and availability.

5. Luka Dončić (+70) — Dončić's jump was mostly due to health consistency, but 33.4 PPG, 7.9 RPG and 8.4 APG were enough for a top-five finish despite poor free throws and 4.0 turnovers. The Lakers have since added Walker Kessler, giving Dončić a proper rim-running centre that should help his assists and efficiency. The free throws and turnovers still make him much stronger in some builds than others.

6. Kawhi Leonard (+114) — Leonard's per-game profile was expected. The difference was that he played 78% of the schedule, allowing the efficiency, steals and low turnovers to count for a full season. His team situation remains unsettled and the health uncertainty remains, which is why he has been going closer to the third round in drafts.

7. Donovan Mitchell (+24) — Mitchell combined 28.0 points, 3.3 threes and 1.6 steals with his best availability in several seasons. Cleveland added James Harden at the deadline and retained him for 2026-27. A full season together should create easier shots for Mitchell, but less time on the ball. Repeating this finish would probably require the steals and availability to hold.

8. Scottie Barnes (+33) — Barnes paired rare defensive production for a playmaking forward with 97% availability. Toronto still has Brandon Ingram, RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley, leaving little room for a large usage jump. His steals, blocks, rebounds and assists are repeatable, but the near-perfect availability helped push him to eighth.

9. Cade Cunningham (+9) — Cunningham carried Detroit's creation burden and averaged 9.9 APG alongside 24.5 PPG and 1.5 steals. Detroit added shooting rather than another primary initiator, so his role remains intact while the improved spacing should give him cleaner driving lanes and passing options. He can be expected to continue improving, particularly in scoring efficiency, free throws and turnovers.

10. Jalen Johnson (+51) — Johnson broke out with 22.7 points, 10.4 rebounds and 8.0 assists, but the full-season line hides a weaker second half after CJ McCollum arrived in the Trae Young trade. McCollum took on part of Atlanta's scoring and creation load and will return next season. Johnson still has first-round upside, but his early-season usage is unlikely to return in full.

11. James Harden (-5) — Harden's 11th-place finish combines 44 games as the Clippers' primary creator with 26 in the smaller Cleveland role he carries into 2026-27 beside Donovan Mitchell. His assists, threes and free throws remain valuable, but his full-season scoring and usage are unlikely to carry over.

12. Kevin Durant (-2) — Durant remained elite in a lower-usage Houston role, shooting .517 from the field and .885 from the line. That role should remain stable alongside Alperen Şengün and Amen Thompson. The concern is how likely he is to repeat 96% availability at age 37, not necessarily the shooting.

Risers and fallers

The change column compares each player's finish with the prior season. A large move may reflect development, a new role or simply more games played.

Biggest risers

Player Chg Availability Driver
Reed Sheppard +311 100% Sophomore leap
Jaylon Tyson +308 90% Expanded role
Ryan Rollins +277 97% Starter role
Collin Gillespie +276 99% More minutes and creation
Cam Spencer +259 96% Rotation breakthrough
Neemias Queta +255 94% Expanded frontcourt role
Kevin Porter Jr. +204 54% High-usage return
Ajay Mitchell +197 69% Expanded guard role

Role-driven risers: Reed Sheppard, Jaylon Tyson, Ryan Rollins and Collin Gillespie earned larger roles and produced more within them. Those gains can last if the opportunities do.

Availability-driven risers: Kawhi Leonard (+114) and Chet Holmgren (+82) rose largely because they played more. Their production was already established; their health remains harder to project.

Mixed cases: Jalen Johnson improved in a larger role, then lost some usage. The breakout was real, but his final rank may overstate next season's opportunity.

Biggest fallers

Because availability factors into the rankings, many of the largest declines naturally belonged to players who missed substantial time. But certain players lost role or per-game value last season.

Underlying decline: Ivica Zubac (-93) played 87% of the schedule and still fell sharply. His 14.1 points and 10.6 rebounds remained useful, but 0.8 blocks, 0.4 steals and poor free throws left too little category impact around them. Myles Turner (-44) similarly played 93% of the schedule, but .442 shooting and 5.3 rebounds weakened what had been a more complete centre profile.

Reduced role: Daniel Gafford (-78) remained efficient at .648 with 1.2 blocks, but fell to 9.2 points and 7.0 rebounds. Better health alone will not restore his value; he needs more minutes and frontcourt responsibility.

Health and production: Jalen Williams (-107) played only 37% of the schedule, but 17.5 points, 0.8 threes and 0.3 blocks also fell short of his previous profile. Jakob Poeltl (-87) similarly needs more than better availability after slipping to 10.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 0.7 blocks.

Mostly availability: Anthony Davis (-85), Tyler Herro (-96) and Franz Wagner (-73) retained useful production when active but played 40% or less of the schedule. Their rankings should rebound if they stay healthy, although the likelihood of that differs considerably between players.

What this means for your 2026-27 draft

Last season's rank means less when the role or health outlook has changed.

  • Stable role and genuine growth: Cade Cunningham and Donovan Clingan improved without losing the opportunities that produced it.
  • Breakout, but fewer touches ahead: Tyrese Maxey and Jalen Johnson can remain excellent while falling short of their 2025-26 ranks.
  • Don't overvalue per-game production: Kawhi Leonard, Anthony Davis, and Embiid should be priced according to how much availability risk a roster can absorb.
  • Injury discounts: a faller becomes good value only when the draft-day discount exceeds the expected value lost to the injury.
